Solar Eclipse 1989
Necklace, 18 k yellow gold, enamel
I used tin shears to cut the seven disks freehand out of thin sheet gold and then applied the enamel with a paintbrush. Partial mat polishing of the enamel additionally animates the black surfaces. The loop-and-wire links between the disks are flexible. The sun describes an orbit around the neck, but it could as easily be the moon. The idea demonstrates the mechanics of the skies: phases of waxing and waning, or the phases of an eclipse. The two extremesfull and newhave intentionally been omitted, one all-black and one all-gold disk together forming a pair of complementary earrings.
