Snake Playing with a Pearl 1995
Bracelet: Iron, cultured pearl, gold, black diamond, malachite pigment, cinnabar pigment. Forged out of a rattail file, like the first snake bracelet; body painted with malachite pigment, gorge with cinnabar. The reptile is holding a cultured pearl in its jaws; the eyes are brought to life with black diamonds in gold settings. A Taoist myth compares the universe to a pearl, kept in constant motion by two dragons at play. In Shobogenzo, written between 1231-1253 by the Japanese Zen patriarch Dogen, the chapter “A Clear Pearl” recounts the story of a Chinese master named Gensha, who, having attained enlightenment, used to compare the universe to a pure pearl.
